This October, the African School of Regulation (ASR) embarked on a strategic mission to Italy, engaging with key partners and institutions to advance collaboration in energy regulation and capacity building.
The visit began with ASR’s participation in the Enel Foundation event, “Harnessing Opportunity – The Evolving Regulatory Landscape in Africa,” where Executive Director Abdulkadir Shettima and Senior Advisor Prof. Ignacio Pérez-Arriaga joined leading voices to reflect on how policy, regulation, and education can accelerate a just and inclusive energy transition across Africa. Hosted by one of ASR’s founding partners, the event brought together Italian stakeholders and government representatives to explore pathways for strengthening Africa–Europe cooperation in the energy sector.

Following this, the ASR leadership team, Director Abdulkadir Shettima, Prof. Ignacio Pérez-Arriaga, and General Manager Mariano Morazzo visited the Florence School of Regulation (FSR) at the European University Institute (EUI), the birthplace of the ASR concept. Over two days, the team engaged in strategic dialogue with FSR and EUI colleagues, focusing on shared missions, research priorities, and future collaboration.

During the visit, the ASR team received a strategic overview of FSR’s work from Director Leonardo Meeus and explored policy-relevant research presented by FSR scholars. They held in-depth discussions on regulatory strategy with Ilaria Conti and Alberto Pototschnig and participated in collaborative sessions on executive education, curriculum design, communications, and donor engagement with Daniela Bernardo and Chiara Canestrini.

The mission also included high-level meetings with EUI Secretary General Armando Barucco and Elena A., Coordinator for External Relations, as well as broader institutional reflections with Prof. Erik Jones, Director of the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies.

This mission marks a pivotal step in reinforcing ASR–FSR ties and deepening ASR’s engagement with European partners to support resilient, inclusive, and well-regulated energy systems across Africa.
