On 12 September 2024, at the Makerere University campus in Kampala, ASR and Makerere University (Mak) decided to collaborate in developing joint activities in the field of energy regulation in Africa.

During the policy dialogue on sustainable and scalable mini-grid business model held at Makerere University from 10 to 12 September 2024, the ASR Director, Dr Frederick Oloo Nyang, the Senior Applied Researcher, Dr Charly Gatete and the ASR External Advisor, Prof Jose Ignacio Perez Arriaga, visited the Mak’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, in the presence of Mr Yusuf Kiranda, Mak Secretary, Prof Edward Bbaale, Principal, College of Business and Management Sciences and Prof Okumu Mike Ibrahim, Associate Professor and Dean School of Economics.

The two delegations presented their respective institutions and discussed how they contribute to capacity development in Africa. They also discussed the importance of continuing efforts and building collaborative projects and activities in energy policy and regulation in Africa. Energy regulation is a new topic in Africa, and they reaffirm the need for a multidisciplinary approach where research and academic (training) enrich each other.

The Policy Dialogue organised at the Mak premises is the first joint activity organized by the two organisations, and they agree to continue this fruitful partnership in conducting research, training, and policy events.

The Vice Chancellor of Mak and the Director of ASR have signed an MoU in the presence of their team and expect to undertake several activities to promote the sustainable development of the energy sector in Africa.
