Zanzibar, Tanzania |12 September 2023- The African School of Regulation (ASR) achieved a significant breakthrough at the African Union (AU) 4th ordinary session of the Specialised Technical Committee on Transport, Interregional Infrastructure and Energy (STC-TTIIE). The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) called upon the AU to officially endorse the ASR, recognising its pivotal role in advancing sustainable energy solutions in Africa.

Key Highlights:

  • AU Backing: Responding to UNECA’s plea the AU officially endorsed the ASR, reinforcing its commitment to enhancing human capital in the African energy sector.
  • Pan-African Scope: The AU urged pan-African organizations to unite behind ASR, emphasizing the collaborative nature of the initiative.

The meeting adopted the following statement on the ASR:

Welcome the establishment of the African School of Regulation (ASR) as a pan-African centre of excellence to enhance the capacity of member States on energy regulation; acknowledge the progress made so far by the ASR; request the AUC, AUDA-NEPAD, ECA, AFREC, the AfDB and other regional entities to work with the Pan African University system, African universities, development partners, and various relevant entities to support the successful implementation of the ASR for the benefit of member States; and call on the ASR to design and implement programmes in support of the accelerated implementation of the AfSEM.”
