A new report titled “Guidelines on Transmission Pricing and Cost Allocation for Regional Power Trade” has been released, offering a much-needed framework to guide the equitable and efficient pricing of cross-border electricity transmission in Africa.

Developed through a collaborative process involving regional stakeholders, the guidelines aim to address longstanding challenges in power trade, including cost recovery for shared infrastructure, transparency in pricing methodologies, and fair compensation among participating countries. As Africa works toward deeper power market integration, these principles will help ensure that transmission costs do not become a barrier to expanding regional electricity trade.

The report lays out key regulatory considerations, cost allocation mechanisms, and implementation options for regional economic communities, regulators, utilities, and policymakers. It marks an important step toward harmonizing practices and improving the financial sustainability of interconnected power systems across the continent.
