The African Opportunity in Carbon Trading

ASR/AFUR Webinar Series

The African School of Regulation (ASR) and the African Forum for Utility Regulators (AFUR) hosted a webinar exploring how carbon trading can support Africa’s clean energy transition and create financing opportunities for renewable energy projects.

The session explained compliance and voluntary carbon markets and examined how eligible solar, wind, hydro and geothermal projects could generate revenue through carbon credits linked to verified emissions reductions.

Discussions also explored the conditions needed for effective participation, including clear regulations, robust monitoring and reporting systems, and fair benefit-sharing. Participants considered barriers such as project costs, limited market access and policy uncertainty, alongside practical steps to strengthen Africa’s participation in global carbon markets.
